SITE_REVIEWDrummer Cecil Brooks, in the liner notes to this CD, describes the music he created with altoist Greg Osby and tenor-saxophonist Gary Thomas: "We attack the changes; how they're executed is non-traditional. Greg and Gary leave most horn players wondering what they're doing." Their almost nonmelodic styles emphasize rhythmic and harmonic rather than melodic development, the two saxophonists have their own sounds and the logic in their improvisations is both unpredictable and highly original. The versatile pianist Geri Allen fits in well with her contemporaries and both bassist Lonnie Plaxico and Brooks (who contributed two originals) are strong in support of the soloists. The two versions of "We'll Be Together Again," a funky "West Coast Blues" and an intense rendition of "Temptation" serve as excellent examples of this interesting music which was labelled "M-Base" and could be accurately called "free funk." ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
