SITE_REVIEWK-Tel immediately dated this compilation when they gave it its title, but the majority of the tracks on it have stood the test of time. As a snapshot of hip-hop circa 1992, it's hardly thorough (you'd need at least a couple filled-to-capacity discs for that), but it does serve up a rather diverse selection. Too Short's uncharacteristically raunch-free "I Want to Be Free (That's the Truth)," X-Clan's characteristically Afrocentric "Xodus," Eric B. & Rakim's "Don't Sweat the Technique" (the greatest track DJ Premier didn't produce), and Shabba Ranks' crossover hit "Mr. Loverman" give you some idea of the scope. Diamond D & the Psychotic Neurotics' "Best Kept Secret," Spice 1's "Welcome to the Ghetto," and Digital Underground's "No Nose Job" add further weight to the disc, but Snap's "Rhythm Is a Dancer" has absolutely no business being included. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide
