In the 1980s and 1990s, the issue of whether or not labels should place warning stickers on CDs was hotly debated by the Parents' Music Resource Center (PMRC) and its opponents. Critics of the PMRC saw warning stickers as a form of censorship, and the PMRC's Tipper Gore countered that the organization wasn't trying to ban or censor artists with explicit lyrics -- it was simply trying to keep parents informed. Ironically, some labels ended up using warning stickers as a marketing tool; seeing the words "warning: explicit lyrics" on a CD has a way of grabbing consumers' attention.
